NeumorphismWhat is it? Is it new? (no) Is it the next big visual trend (probably) Can I do it? (definitely)
Neumorphism is simply a tone-on-tone visual treatment that takes advantage of copious amounts of drop shadows and outer glow. While the trend in UI is recent, I've applied a similar visual style because of my background of studying motion design Los Angeles in the mid-2000's. It's not new to me, it's borrowed and appropriated onto Google's Material Design, and I got there first simply by being inspired by Dieter Rams and my familiarity with Photoshop drop shadows inspired by photographic lighting.
I think that my take on neumorphism is a love of simple and modern design aesthetic. While designing in an innovations lab for Smart Home applications, I was requested to look at Dieter Rams as a design inspiration. Rams was an industrial designer from the 60's and his use of the mid-century modern aesthetic is very evident across his stark product design. Interestingly enough, the famed Apple designer Jonathan Ive also loved his work.
This is one of my favorite UI designs, a Smart Home control for Phillips Hue bulbs. These two wheels would alter the brightness of the light as well as change the color hue. I was inspired directly from a Dieter Rams product, Tonarmwaage, and used my own modern design aesthetic to update it. I took multiple drop shadows, inner shadows, and a faded out gray gradient on the card background and treat the dials. Although the design is decidedly flat, I used my experience with shading, lighting, and dimension to really build a richer mobile UI control.
